School buildings across Italy: where are the greatest needs?

A new CDP Think Tank study on what territories need in terms of school buildings

The conditions buildings housing public schools are in, the most common problems and how much does the NRRP allocate to upgrades and safety. These are the main themes at the heart of CDP Think Tank’s new brief, entitled “School buildings across Italy: where are the greatest needs?”.

The study analyses the structural condition of Italian schools, focusing in particular on whether they have heating systems, measures to overcome architectural barriers and reduce energy consumption, and earthquake-proof design.

The school buildings with the most deficiencies are located in the most suburban areas and in municipalities experiencing a more difficult financial situation. The most critical problems are concentrated – though not consistently – in the south of Italy and concern the lack of measures to reduce energy consumption.

Future school building projects, which will also be carried out thanks to the significant resources allocated by the NRRP – amounting to €5.4 billion – will focus on school buildings’ environmental sustainability, safety and structural adequacy, which will contribute to the fight against early school leaving and will guarantee quality teaching, primary factors for the development of human capital and the reduction of social and territorial inequality.
