An emerging form of tourism is linked to astronomical observation, which requires a sky free from light pollution. This is a feature of the trail leading up to Mount San Primo, located in the Como area in the Lombard Pre-Alps, at just over one thousand metres above sea level. A vantage point from which Brianza and Milan are visible, and where the new Sormano astronomical observatory is located. The facility includes a library, dormitories, a bookshop, conference and exhibition spaces, two domes and a telescope. With a total value of 2 million euros, the project involved the use of materials that blend into the beautiful surrounding environment.
Over the years the hub (which will be converted into a solar observatory) has focused its research on asteroids and comets, and successfully promoted outreach initiatives involving schools, universities, local associations and groups of enthusiasts, attracting over 10 thousand visitors a year.
These activities will be further developed with the new observatory, which will be promoted as a centre for astronomical research and education, also helping to attract tourists from abroad.
