CDP and Poste, 150 years of Italian savings

“Encouraging and protecting all forms of savings, CDP and Poste Italiane are agents of the Italian Constitution thanks to their ability to rise to the challenges of contemporary society and meet the expectations of the country”, remarked the President of Italy at the celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Passbook Savings Accounts and the 100th anniversary of Postal Savings Bonds.

Financial instruments guaranteed by the State, issued by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and distributed by Poste Italiane which have contributed to the creation of a genuine savings culture. The success can be seen in the numbers: today these instruments have around 27 million subscribers for total investments worth €320 billion.

In attendance at the event held by CDP and Poste at the La Nuvola conference centre in Rome were the Minister of Economy and Finance Giancarlo Giorgetti, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Aldolfo Urso, the chairpersons of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and Poste Italiane Giovanni Gorno Tempini and Silvia Maria Rovere, CEO of CDP Dario Scannapieco, CEO of Poste Italiane Matteo Del Fante, General Manager of Poste Italiane Giuseppe Lasco, as well as representatives of Italian political and financial institutions and 200 mayors.

The postal savings account was launched in 1875, enabling millions of Italians to start depositing their savings thanks to a widespread network of offices also located in municipalities where access to financial services was more limited. Fifty years later came the Savings Bonds, which proved very popular for their convenience.

The resources invested were used by CDP to finance the growth of the country, contributing to the construction of transport infrastructure like roads, railways, ports and energy and telecommunication networks, as well as key social institutions like schools, hospitals and other works aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens. Over the years, these commitments were expanded with support for small, medium and large enterprises and the promotion of international development, particularly in emerging economies.

Activities that represent the core of the CDP and Poste mission of transforming savings into the future, making Italy as sustainable and competitive as possible.
