CDP and Fonplata join forces to protect the Río de la Plata region in South America

Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) and Fonplata – a multilateral financial institution made up of five South American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay – have announced their first agreement, worth 30 million dollars.

The funding provided by CDP will support so-called “green and blue projects”, initiatives aimed at protecting the ecosystem of the Río de la Plata region, which spans areas of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. The resources will be used to launch projects across a range of sectors, including renewable energy production, the development of low-emission transport infrastructure and efficient water management. At the same time, they will support the conservation and promotion of the region’s natural and water resources, for example through the creation of green routes and environmental parks.

This marks CDP’s first financing operation with the multilateral institution Fonplata, a partnership that forms part of the Group’s broader strategy as Italy’s development finance institution. This role is carried out in close coordination with the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Since 2023 CDP has mobilised more than 170 million dollars in the region through a combination of its own funds and resources managed on behalf of third parties.

Paolo Lombardo, Director of International Development Cooperation at CDP, commented: “We are pleased to have established a new partnership with a key regional institution like FONPLATA. Our mission is to promote sustainable global development by financing long-term, strategic projects that support social inclusion and climate resilience. We’re confident that this collaboration will make a meaningful contribution to these goals across the Latin American region.”
