CDP supports the Municipality of Vicenza for the restoration of the Torre del Tormento

€ 350,000 loan for the historic building where Silvio Pellico was imprisoned

The aim is to preserve the historical and artistic value of the Torre del Tormento and make it accessible to everyone. With this objective in mind, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti decided to support the Municipality of Vicenza with a € 350,000 loan for the restoration of the Torre del Tormento.

Located right in the city centre, behind the Basilica Palladiana, the tower is also known as Torre del Girone because of the deep moat that surrounded it. It was built by the Carnaroli family in the 12th century, over the years it was used a residence and then, for almost two centuries, as a prison (amongst others, Silvio Pellico and Federico Confalonieri were imprisoned here on their way from the Piombi to the Spielberg).

Thanks to CDP's support, the municipality of Vicenza will be able to start a project to preserve and reinforce the tower's external walls, to maintain its historical and artistic value, and to include it in visitor tours of the adjacent Basilica Palladiana.

Once it has been restored and upgraded, the Tower will become a new tourist attraction for the city and the Veneto region. This project is in line with CDP's ongoing commitment to support local authorities and the whole country.
