Artificial Intelligence Request for Proposals

Together with Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione CDP, in line with the goals of the Assistance and Scientific research Sector in the area “support for emergencies and sustainability”, launches the Artificial Intelligence Request for Proposals with the aim of identifying and supporting innovative projects in this area that have a tangible impact on the local area in economic, environmental and social terms.

Context and Partnership

Artificial intelligence is one of the biggest enablers of the digital transformation and the development of the economy. This technology can help us address some of the most pressing challenges of our time, such as the fight against climate change and environmental degradation, the treatment of chronic illnesses and the management of demographic change. It also represents an opportunity to improve healthcare standards, facilitate access to information, education and training, and promote greater levels of security for European citizens.

This commitment to a highly topical theme like Artificial Intelligence mirrors initiatives on the European agenda like the EU Digital Europe Programme, Horizon Europe and Next Generation.

Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo is a philanthropic foundation of banking origins that pursues socially useful goals with the aim of contributing, with the returns on its assets, to the cultural, civil and economic development of the area in which it operates. In 2020 Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, as part of the missions of Obiettivo Pianeta, promoted the first iteration of a request for proposals dedicated to artificial intelligence and its ethical applications at the service of society, involving universities and research centres.
This new Request for Proposals, promoted in collaboration with Fondazione CDP, follows on from the positive results of the previous one and, thanks to the before mentioned partnership, extends its reach to the rest of Italy.

The Request for Proposals

The RFP aims to investigate the opportunities offered by AI in four areas:

Health and wellbeing – to encourage reflection on the use and effective management of data in the healthcare setting and planning oriented towards pilot projects capable of using AI for innovative and sustainable impacts;
Environment and green transition – to encourage reflection on the challenges deriving from the use of AI and pilot projects capable of using AI to produce positive and sustainable impacts for the environment;
Protection and risk insurance – to encourage reflection on the opportunities AI offers in the insurance sphere and projects focused on innovative applications;
Education and training – to encourage reflection and planning oriented towards pilot projects capable of using AI in the field of education and training.

The value of the RFP is 4 million euro: four partnerships will be selected, one for each area, and each partnership will be awarded a sum of up to 1 million euro.

The Request for Proposals involves the presentation of projects by partnerships consisting of at least 7 components: a leader (departments of the five university partners of Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, Turin University and Polytechnic, University of Eastern Piedmont, University of Genoa and Federico II University of Naples), an evaluation body, two R&D partners and at least two local partners (organisations and businesses from anywhere in Italy).

Expression of Interests must be sent to ricerca@pec.compagnia.torino.it by 1 p.m. on 15 March 2022. Applications must be presented by completing the ROL (online request) procedure by 1 p.m. on 31 May 2022.
