Gioiosa Marea rediscovers its seafront: a terrace that looks out over the Aeolian Islands

A place of stunning natural beauty near the Aeolian Islands in the Mediterranean. Gioiosa Marea, a well-known tourist resort in the province of Messina, is the location for a major urban regeneration project supported by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.

Thanks to a loan of around 700,000 euro from CDP, the Municipality has begun work on the modernisation and redevelopment of the Canapè area, one of the most attractive parts of the town.

Featuring a new pavement made from local stone, marble balustrades and handrails, new benches and rubbish bins, a modern lighting system and flowerbeds decorated with ornamental plants, the project has transformed the promenade into a safe and welcoming space. Particular attention was focused on eliminating architectural barriers to guarantee complete accessibility also to people with disabilities.

A project that makes Gioiosa Marea a more compelling tourist destination but also gives local residents attractive and inclusive social spaces that improve their quality of life and the urban fabric.

This initiative is the latest in a long line of projects jointly promoted by CDP and the Municipality which since 1972 has included the development of water and sewage infrastructure, roads, schools, recreational spaces and public buildings. Over fifty years of works promoting local development and the wellbeing of the community.
