Fondazione CDP honoured at the Quirinale by AIRC for its support of cancer research

Recognition that highlights a long-standing collaboration and targeted investment in scientific talent in Southern Italy

Support for scientific research and the promotion of talent: these were the reasons why Fondazione CDP received the “Believing in Research” award from Fondazione Airc during the ceremony held at the Quirinale Palace in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

Accepting the award – the first step in the awareness campaign “The Days of Research” – was the Chairman of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and Fondazione CDP, Giovanni Gorno Tempini, accompanied by the General Manager of Fondazione CDP, Francesca Sofia.

The award was given for consistently and confidently entrusting AIRC with the process of evaluating projects for the funding of cancer research. Fondazione CDP has thus been able to provide concrete support, with a total donation of €500,000 over four years to the work of two scientists who won the AIRC “Southern Italy Scholars (SIS)” call for outstanding young researchers working in Southern Italy and on the islands. The contribution made it possible to support the researchers’ experimental work, the acquisition of advanced equipment and the employment of dedicated personnel, with the goal of developing new diagnostic and therapeutic solutions.

Giovanni Gorno Tempini, Chairman of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and Fondazione CDP, noted that “The award received from AIRC is an important recognition for Fondazione CDP of the value we assign to scientific research as a driver of progress and social cohesion. Investing in the talent of young researchers, especially in the South, means believing in a future where innovation and merit are the pillars of sustainable, inclusive development. The collaboration with AIRC allows us to contribute to independent research aimed at generating new therapeutic perspectives and strengthening the country’s human capital.”
Francesca Sofia, General Manager of Fondazione CDP, added that “This recognition holds great meaning for us: it’s the result of a shared vision that places the focus on the value of research and the talent of young scientists. Supporting the work of those who dedicate themselves each and every day to advancing knowledge with passion and expertise means promoting a model in which opportunities are not tied to geography but to the value of ideas. The collaboration with AIRC has made it possible to transform this commitment into concrete initiatives capable of generating a real impact on people’s lives and within the scientific community.”
The ceremony at the Quirinale Palace marked the launch of “The Days of Research” national campaign promoted by Fondazione AIRC to raise the public’s awareness of the importance of cancer research. Now in its 30th edition, the initiative involves schools, universities, media and public spaces across Italy, renewing the collective commitment to the fight against cancer.
